Product information

The Steinernema feltiae nematodes can be used as biological control agents of the larval stages of fern mosquitoes (ground flies / Sciaridae), dolls of thrips and larvae of yew beetle. They are supplied in mineral powder which is ready to be mixed with water. With this mixture you can easily spray the soil with a watering can. EELWORMS ARE ACTIVE AGAINST The Steinernema feltiae nematodes are effective against the larvae and pupae of the following pest insects: In the soil the Steinernema feltiae can fight the larval stages of sciarid flies (ground flies, Sciaridae), dolls of thrips and larvae of yew beetle. The Steinernema feltiae can also be applied to the leaves. In that case they can fight larvae and pupae of thrips. WHAT ARE EELWORMS? Nematodes are naturally occurring roundworms (Nematodes). They are very small (0.3 to 0.7 mm) and therefore invisible. They are harmless to humans, animals and plants. HOW DOES THE FIGHT WORK WITH EELWORMS? Nematodes live in the soil and look for larvae and pupae of pest insects. They can not fight adult specimens. There are many types of nematodes that are each specifically targeted to a particular type of host. They penetrate their prey and contaminate them with a bacterium from their intestinal tract. This bacterium multiplies in the host and ensures that it stops causing damage and eventually dies. Nematodes then feed on these same bacteria, which in turn multiplies them. A single insect larva can be the hotbed of thousands of nematodes. The pest insects are thus attacked by a veritable army of nematodes. Once the host has been killed, the nematodes leave them and start looking for new hosts. As long as there are prey in the soil, the nematodes can sustain themselves and multiply. TEMPERATURE AND SURROUNDINGS The nematodes can be used at a soil temperature above 8 degrees. At a bottom temperature below 4 degrees and above 34 degrees, the bet is not recommended. It is important that the nematodes are applied to a damp soil, it should not dry out for several weeks for optimal performance. Regular spraying in dry weather is a must. During or just before a rain shower is an ideal time to turn off the nematodes. Note, do not switch off at night frost. EFFORT If you have to turn off the nematodes exactly, it depends on the development phase of the respective host. Ideally, the host is in a sensitive state so that the nematodes can easily penetrate the prey. Because nematodes only focus on the larvae and pupae of the pest insects, they can best be released in late spring and early autumn. We advise about 500,000 nematodes per m2 in case of a mild infection. With a larger infection you can increase this number to 1 million nematodes per m2. You can repeat this bet after 2-3 weeks. The plotting for leaf application is as follows: - Allow the nematodes to reach room temperature at least half an hour before the application. - Take a watering can with an opening of at least 0.5 mm. Remove any sieves / seals so that the water comes out freely. - Take a bucket and fill it with 5 to 10 liters of lukewarm water (15-20 degrees). Throw the whole pack of nematode powder into the bucket and stir well so that no lumps are visible. Allow the mixture to soak for 5 minutes. Then stir well again. - Advice is 250,000 nematodes per m2. You must therefore dilute the 10-liter mixture proportionately so that you spray the right number of nematodes per m2. - Spray the crop evenly with the mixture. SHELF LIFE We advise to use the nematodes as soon as possible after receipt. If you want to store them longer than you can store them in a fridge (2-8 degrees). The expiration date is stated on the packaging.
