Ballast or VSA ~ Supply your lamp with power

What is a ballast or VSA?

Do you want to buy a ballast or VSA? If you want to use an HPS, CMH or CDM lamp and connect it to the mains, you also need a ballast. A ballast or ballast ensures that your gas discharge lamps can start up without any problems, a ballast is used to prevent peak voltages that can occur when starting up such a powerful lamp. There are two types of ballasts available, electronic ballast and magnetic ballast.

Ballast

What is an electronic ballast?

An electronic ballast can also be called a digital ballast. Such a digital ballast is often dimmable, dimmable means that you can adjust the power that such a device delivers to your lamp. In most cases this can be adjusted downwards but in some cases you can also 'boost' it, meaning you can adjust a 600 watt ballast to 660 watts for example. The more wattage hung above your crop, the higher the yield will be, because light is weight. An electronic ballast requires lower amperage than a magnetic ballast but produces higher output despite the lower amperage.

What is a magnetic or a conventional ballast?

A magnetic ballast can also be called a conventional ballast, these ballasts consist of a choke and a starter. These devices suppress the discharge current produced when a grow light is turned on to prevent uncontrolled increases in electrical voltage, these electrical voltages can cause your grow light to burn out.

Is a ballast and a grow light sufficient?

To run your grow light, a grow light and a ballast are not enough, you also need a reflector. You connect a ballast to the mains, connect the ballast to the reflector and in the reflector you turn your grow lamp. With this setup you can only supply your crop with light.
