Cultiwool Plug - Growing Plug
Rockwool growing plugs for seed germination and plant propagation – Cultiwool Plug
Cultiwool Plug growing plugs are made of stone wool and are suitable for germinating seeds and developing roots on plant cuttings. They provide a compact growing medium for the early stages of plant growth, before seedlings or rooted cuttings are transferred to larger growing blocks or some other suitable growing system.
The plugs are offered in different sizes. Both variants are supplied in trays of individual plugs, 18 trays per box. The different sizes mean growers can choose a format that matches their propagation method and cultivation setup.
How does it function?
Stone wool is a mineral growing medium made of fibres which make a structure which can hold water but still have air spaces. You have to find a balance when propagating because the roots that are growing need moisture and oxygen.
Cultiwool stone wool is described by the manufacturer as a clean and inert substrate. It does not release or bind substances very much, so growers have control over the water and nutrients they feed their plants in the irrigation solution.
The plugs support the seeds and cuttings while the roots start to grow. Once the roots have grown enough the plugs can be transferred to compatible larger growing blocks or put into an appropriate growing system.
Main features and applications
- Stone Wool Growing Medium: Offering physical support for seeds, seedlings and cuttings in the early stages of development.
- Water and air balance: Its fibrous structure retains the moisture, but leaves air available around developing roots.
- Uniform plug format: Consistent dimensions support a more uniform propagation process and facilitate handling.
- Comes in two sizes: Smaller plugs for a compact starting medium, larger plugs for more growing volume per plug.
- Tray packaging: individual plugs are packed in trays, making it easier to handle them during sowing, propagation and transplanting.
- Hydroponic suitability: The plugs are usable in hydroponic propagation systems and can be transferred into compatible growing blocks.

Variants Available
Cultiwool Plug 25x25x40 mm
This variant has 150 individual plugs per tray. Because of its small size it will fit into propagation systems with smaller starter plugs.

36 x 36 x 40 mm Cultiwool Plug
This variant has 77 individual plugs per tray. Each plug is larger than the 25 mm version, offering more volume of substrate during early plant development.
- Plug dimensions : 36 x 36 x 40 mm
- 77 Tray Per Plug
- Trays per box 18
- Total plugs per box: 1,386 plugs
How to choose the right size
The right size depends on the propagation method, the crop and the requirements of the next growing stage. The 25 × 25 × 40 mm variant enables more plugs to be fitted per tray and may be suitable for propagation systems designed for compact starter plugs. The 36 × 36 × 40 mm variant provides a larger volume per plug and may be preferred when the propagation set-up requires a larger starting block.
Check the dimensions of the variant to be selected, to be sure that they are suitable for the propagation trays to be used, and that the plugs fit the growing blocks or cultivation system used after propagation.
Considerations of irrigation and use
Prepare and moisten plugs according to the supplier’s directions and crop requirements. Keep a suitable amount of moisture during germination and early root development, but do not keep the substrate too wet. The frequency of irrigation and the concentration of nutrients must be adapted to the crop, the environmental conditions and the stage of growth.
Once the roots have developed sufficiently, carefully move the plugs to the next stage of growing. Don't unnecessarily pull or compress the plug as this can disturb developing roots. Follow the water management, nutrient solution, and transplanting recommendations of the growing system for consistent results.
