Hanna Instruments pH/EC/TDS Multiparameter - Electrode
Replacement electrodes: Hanna Instruments pH/EC/TDS electrodes for water and nutrient solution testing
Replacement Hanna Instruments electrodes support pH (acidity/alkalinity), electrical conductivity (EC) and total dissolved solids (TDS) measurement functions in addition to temperature. Depending on the model, an electrode is a replacement part for the specified Hanna Instruments measuring instrument.
The Hanna Instruments electrodes listed here are used in agriculture, horticulture, greenhouse production and water quality control.
pH measures the acidity or alkalinity of a liquid, EC estimates its ability to conduct electricity and TDS estimates the amount of dissolved substances in a liquid. All three parameters are important in water-based growing systems.
Replacement electrode selection depends on the meter model and the type of the electrode to be replaced. Not all electrodes in this article are compatible and interchangeable.
Electrode types and compatible meters
Table below shows the available electrodes, the measurement functions they support and compatible Hanna Instruments meters.
To order a replacement electrode, it is necessary to know the exact Hanna Instruments meter and electrode model reference.

pH measurement
A pH sensor measures the acidity or alkalinity of a liquid on the pH scale. Solutions with a pH below 7 are considered acidic, solutions with a pH of 7 are neutral and solutions with a pH above 7 are considered alkaline.
pH measurement is an important function for water and nutrient solutions in agriculture and horticulture. It allows checking their properties.
Electrical conductivity and total dissolved solids
Electrical conductivity (EC) is an estimation of how easy it is for a liquid to conduct electricity. EC is estimated by the ions dissolved in a liquid. Units for EC include µS/cm (microsiemens per centimetre) and mS/cm (millisiemens per centimetre).
Total dissolved solids (TDS) estimate the concentration of substances dissolved in a liquid. Units for TDS are ppm (parts per million) or mg/L (milligram per litre). TDS readings can be calculated from EC values with a conversion factor by compatible instruments.
The HI1285-5, HI1285-51 and HI12883 support pH and EC/TDS measurements when used with compatible Hanna Instruments meters. The HI1286A and HI73127 are pH-only sensors. HI12963 measures pH and temperature.
Temperature measurement
Temperature can affect pH and conductivity readings. Compatible Hanna Instruments instruments measure temperature if the probe supports it.
HI12963 measures pH and temperature. HI1286A and HI73127 are pH-only electrodes and should not be chosen if there is an intention to perform EC/TDS measurements.
HI1285-5, HI1285-51 and HI12883 support pH, EC/TDS and temperature measurements when used with compatible Hanna Instruments meters.

Dimensions, cable lengths, operating temperature ranges and connector configurations may differ between models. Specifications for these parameters should be checked separately for each model rather than assumed for the entire group of Hanna Instruments electrodes and probes.
Uses and practical considerations
These Hanna Instruments electrodes and probes are used for performing water quality tests for horticulture, agriculture and water treatment.
Multiparameter electrodes are useful in cases when multiple measurements are required for one sample. For instance, a nutrient solution should be checked for both pH and EC to measure its acidity and conductivity.
If the meter is intended to perform pH measurements only, a compatible pH electrode can be chosen as a replacement.
When selecting a replacement electrode, it is important to take into account the following points:
- Model number: The complete number including suffixes like -5 or -51 should be confirmed for the meter.
- Connector type: Different connector types, for instance DIN and BNC, cannot be used interchangeably.
- Measurement functions: Choose the electrode that supports required functions such as pH only or pH, EC/TDS and temperature.
- Operating conditions: Check the operating temperature range and the types of samples that should be used with Hanna Instruments electrodes.
- Calibration: Calibrate the meter and electrode according to the manufacturer's recommendations.
Installation, cleaning and storage
Before installing a new electrode, follow the procedure described in the manufacturer's instructions and switch off the measuring instrument if necessary. Install the replacement electrode using the specified connector. Make sure that the electrode is firmly connected before making any measurements.
Between samples, rinse the electrode to minimize cross-contamination. If the electrode surface becomes contaminated with deposits, clean it using the recommended solutions. Abrasive materials should not be used to clean the sensitive parts of the electrode.
Calibration of the instrument is important to achieve accurate measurements, especially in case of pH measurement. Calibration solutions should be used according to the manufacturer's recommendations.
Storage requirements may depend on the type of the electrode. pH-sensitive glass electrodes should be stored in a special storage solution. Deionized water or distilled water cannot be used for storage of pH-sensitive electrodes. Always follow the manufacturer's storage recommendations for the chosen electrode model.
Can I use any Hanna Instruments electrode with any Hanna meter?
No. Electrode connector types, electrical configurations and measurement functions vary depending on the model. Always select the replacement electrode specified for your meter model.
Which Hanna Instruments models measure pH, EC, TDS and temperature?
The HI1285-5, HI1285-51 and HI12883 support pH, EC, TDS and temperature measurements when used with compatible Hanna Instruments meters.
Always check the specifications for the chosen Hanna Instruments electrode and meter.
Which Hanna Instruments models measure pH only?
The HI1286A and HI73127 are pH-only electrodes. The HI1286A has a BNC connector and is intended for compatible Hanna Instruments pH meters. The HI73127 is a replacement electrode for Hanna Instruments pocket meters.
Can the HI12963 replace an HI1285-series electrode?
Do not assume these electrodes are interchangeable. The HI12963 measures pH and temperature and has a titanium body. HI1285-series electrodes support different measurement functions and have model-specific connectors.
It is necessary to check the compatibility documentation for your Hanna Instruments meter before choosing a replacement electrode.
How do I identify the correct replacement?
Check the electrode reference on the electrode itself, the meter model number and the meter's documentation. If the reference on the electrode is unreadable, consult the Hanna Instruments documentation for your meter to find out which electrode is required.
