Hanna Instruments pH/EC Calibration Solution - Calibration Fluid
Hanna Instruments pH/EC calibration solution – Reference fluids for meter calibration
The Hanna Instruments pH/EC calibration solutions are reference fluids that are used to calibrate the meters measuring pH value and electrical conductivity (EC) of the liquid. Calibration ensures that the reading of the measuring device matches the reference value of the parameter. It is necessary in such applications as laboratory research, horticulture, agriculture, aquariums and other cases when accurate measurements are required.
The available calibration solutions offer different reference values of the tested parameters. The selection of the variant depends on the type of the instrument and the measurement range that should be tested. The pH solutions are used to calibrate pH meters, whereas EC solutions – to calibrate the meters of the electrical conductivity of liquids. These are different calibration solutions and cannot calibrate both measurement types.
Calibration solution variants available
| Model | Reference value | Intended use |
| HI70004P | pH 4.01 | Calibration of pH meters at the acidic reference point |
| HI70007P | pH 7.01 | Calibration of pH meters at the near-neutral reference point |
| HI70030P | 12,880 µS/cm (12.88 mS/cm) | Calibration of EC meters at a higher conductivity reference value |
| HI70031P | 1,413 µS/cm (1.413 mS/cm) | Calibration of EC meters at a lower conductivity reference value |
All the above listed variants are offered in the packages containing 25 individual sachets of 20 mL. The reference value can be recognized by the model number of the solution.
How pH and EC calibration are done
A pH meter is a device that measures how acidic or alkaline a certain liquid is. The usual pH scale is presented from 0 to 14, with pH 7 as a neutral reference point under standard conditions. The HI70004P solution provides a reference of pH 4.01, while HI70007P provides a pH 7.01. With the help of the appropriate buffer solution the meter will readjust the response to the known pH value.
Electrical conductivity (EC) meter is a device that measures how easily a certain liquid is able to conduct an electric current. Conductivity is measured in microsiemens per centimetre (µS/cm) or millisiemens per centimetre (mS/cm). HI70031P provides a reference value of 1,413 µS/cm, while HI70030P provides a value of 12,880 µS/cm. The right standard will depend on the meter and the conductivity range to be measured.
Calibration does not replace the proper measurement technique and instrument care. The instructions provided with the meter should be carefully considered when selecting the calibration points and performing the calibration procedure.

Single-use sachets to facilitate the calibration process
Each sachet contains 20 mL of calibration solution and should be used once. Individual packaging is very convenient for routine instrument maintenance and periodic calibration since the new portion can be taken out when needed. It reduces the necessity to keep a bottle that should be constantly re-opened.
According to the manufacturer, Hanna Instruments HI70031P conductivity calibration solution is packed in light-blocking sachets with the lot number and expiration date printed on each sachet. The manufacturer guarantees five years shelf life from the date of manufacturing for unopened sachets of this product. Storage conditions and the expiration date should be checked on the sachet packaging.
Applications and equipment compatibility
These calibration solutions are relevant to such users as those who need to calibrate the devices measuring pH value or electrical conductivity of the liquid. The typical application scenarios include:
- Horticulture and agriculture – checking the calibration of meters used to monitor the irrigation water and nutrient solutions.
- Aquariums and aquaculture – calibrating the meters to measure the conditions of the water.
- Laboratories – preparing pH or conductivity meters for the routine measurements.
- Water treatment – checking the meters measuring the water quality.
The solution has to match the parameter and the reference value supported by the meter. Before choosing a variant, you have to consult the instrument manual regarding the acceptable calibration standards. Some meters support the automatic buffer recognition, while others need the reference value to be chosen manually.
Usage and handling
Calibration should be done according to the instructions provided with the meter. Clean container should be used if required, contamination of the sachet contents should be avoided and the used solution should not be returned into the sachet. The electrode should be rinsed according to the instructions between the different calibration solutions to prevent carry-over of one reference value into another.
Temperature may influence the result of the pH or conductivity measurement. In order to make the most adequate calibration, it is necessary to observe the temperature requirements of the meter and reference conditions of the solution. Do not use a pH buffer as an EC standard and vice versa.
These calibration solutions are intended for instrument calibration and are not meant for adjustment of pH or conductivity of the liquid during the normal work. Separate cleaning and storage products may also be required to keep the measuring probe in good condition.
